IMPORTANT CONSULTATION ABOUT PROPOSED CHANGES
AT THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

PLEASE NOTE: This consultation closes on 16th May 2022

Dear Parents, carers and members of the local community,

Change of Age Range Consultation
As a member of the school and local community, you have a stake in the future of Old Hutton Primary School and so we are writing to consult you about a potential change to the school’s age range. We are proposing to change the age range of the school from 4-11 years to 3-11 years. This is because we wish to admit three-year old children into what would become a preschool group within our current Class One cohort. The governing body of the school needs to consult on the proposed changes in line with Department for Education guidance and wishes to receive the views and comments of all stakeholders involved with our school. The consultation period runs for a four week period from 25th April to 16th May. The school will consider all comments received during this time.

The Proposal
We are proposing to extend the age range of children admitted to Old Hutton Primary School from 4-11 to 3-11. Unfortunately we will not be lowering the age range to accommodate 2 year olds as we do not have space in school.  The children would be taught within our well-resourced Class One classroom by our experienced Class One staff team.

Why is the school proposing this change?
As many of you in the local community are aware, Old Hutton Preschool has operated very successfully as an independent setting. However due to rising costs, it has become unsustainable and will be closing at the end of the summer term 2022. We do not want to lose this important provision for the local community so are keen to change our age range to accommodate preschool aged pupils.  Following discussions with Old Hutton Preschool and Old Hutton staff, the school is now proposing to accommodate three-year old children within the school setting from September 2022.

The Benefits
· The local community would continue to be able to access excellent preschool education in the village of Old Hutton
· Preschool children would become an integral part of the school whilst continuing to be taught by an experienced team of outstanding school staff
· Transition from Preschool to Reception, (where children gain a place in Reception at the school) would be smooth and effective, allowing children to settle quickly
· Children’s progress would be enhanced as staff would share their knowledge of individuals throughout the Early Years and into Class Two
· Continuity of education and provision would be provided by a single leadership team and governing body

What sessions would be available?
We propose to offer sessions from 9am to 3pm five days a week. Additionally preschool pupils would be able to attend our breakfast club from 8am – 8.45am and our afterschool club from 3pm – 5.20pm.

What happens next?
At the end of the consultation period, all comments will be considered by the Governing Body and a decision will then be made as to whether to proceed with the process. If the school does proceed, then the first cohort of three-year old children will be admitted from September 2022.

Old Hutton Primary School and Pre-School

Picture
Primary School
The school has around 90 pupils in total who are taught in four classes - Reception/Year 1, Year 2, Years 3/4 and Years 5/6 - and has received impressive Ofsted reports. ICT facilities, in particular, are outstanding for a school of this size, and music and sports are also encouraged. All of these activities are indicative of the forward-looking nature of the school, which also encourages close parental contributions and involvement in both in-school and after-school events.

The Headteacher is Mr Nick Turley.

Pre-School
Old Hutton Preschool and Nursery provides care to children from the age of 2. We provide a family feel environment to your child, with a focus on nurture, fun and development, within the Early Years Foundation Stage. We have extensive outdoor play including a wildlife zone and incorporate many 'forest school’ approaches believing that learning outdoors helps children to thrive. Our indoor area is well equipped creating a stimulating yet informal and calm 'home away from home’ environment to support pre-school learning.

We are 5 minutes from Oxenholme, Endmoor and Gatebeck, 10 minutes from Natland and Kendal, and 15 minutes from Kirkby Lonsdale with good off road parking .

We offer term time care for all children (9am – 3pm) and can offer extended care to preschool children from 8am-5pm in conjunction with Old Hutton School. Your childcare vouchers can be used as we are grant registered .

Our most recent Ofsted stated that we were ‘good with outstanding features’.

Please give us a ring for more information, or come down and visit us one morning.

Secondary Education
Old Hutton children have an excellent choice of state schools - Kirkbie Kendal School and Queen Katherine School, Kendal.

Queen Elizabeth School (Kirkby Lonsdale), Settlebeck High School (Sedbergh) and Dallam School (Milnthorpe) are also used by a number of children in the parish, though these schools are outside the official catchment area and are therefore subject to the admission and transport policies of the day.

In addition to the state education provision, the independent Sedbergh School and Windermere School are within relatively easy travelling distance. These establishments also provide pre-school and primary education facilities.
